Insolvency and gardening have more in common than you might expect. Both involve pruning, digging, and, at times, starting completely from scratch and on this occasion the two worlds met as the hard work of BRI staff was given for a great cause – volunteering with Hertfordshire Mind Network. On 21 August 2025, the BRI Business Recovery and Insolvency team swapped spreadsheets for spades to lend a hand at the Sadie Centre.
Hertfordshire Mind Network, working in partnership with the national Mind charity, focusing on supporting good mental health and wellbeing. Across the county, they offer a variety of services, guidance, and support for local people. One of their wellbeing hubs, the Sadie Centre, provides a welcoming and safe environment where individuals can take part in different activities. These range from yoga and horticultural therapy to Qigong, many of which take place in their tranquil gardens – which we were fortunate enough to tend.
It was a fantastic day of teamwork, with many of us learning completely new skills. The results were clear to see: from laying woodchips across garden paths to clearing brambles and tackling stubborn weeds, there was a job for everyone – and real satisfaction in seeing the difference our efforts made.

Every year BRI set aside at least a day for their staff to venture out from our offices to support and assist a charity. Over the years this has seen our staff help out a wide variety of charitable organisations with tasks on the day ranging from filling shoe boxes with Christmas presents, organising and stacking shelves in a foodbank to laying woodchips and risking the scratches of nettles and thorns to clear brambles. The benefit to the charities is always evident within their great appreciation of the team’s efforts and the benefit to BRI comes in the form of both giving back to communities and the very real bonding and team-building that is generated through the shared efforts at these events.
We consider that the assistance given on these charity days is an extension of the BRI approach to all things, which is to be a reliable critical friend in difficult moments and involves providing the right outcome for all parties regardless of the fee income for us. Therefore, if you or any of your clients require any support dealing with a time of financial difficulty then please do not hesitate to contact any of our offices.
