Silver Award for Sailability Volunteer Peter

Silver Award for Sailability Volunteer Peter

30 August 2017:  As the final Sailability Friday afternoon races for the Summer 2017 season drew to a close the Northampton Sailability Team had a final “Race for Gold” event on Saturday which saw a number of volunteers race their own boats in addition to the regular racers sailing the more accessible Hansa Access 303’s, as pictured, and a Martin.

There is, as you might expect on a reservoir, a level playing field for all the boats taking part as the race officials apply a system called the Portsmouth Yardstick which makes the maths complicated but the results a lot fairer between the heavy keel boats and the nippy Solo’s, Wayfairers, a K1 and a Laser Bahia.

Whilst the sailing on the Saturday may not have gone to plan for Peter (the reservoir’s water level is low and weed took its toll) the evening awards still included a special mention for him as he was presented with both his Bronze and Silver Sailability Certificates recognising his efforts on and off the water for this good cause.

Sailability is open to all and is the national organising charity for disabled sailing. Its mission is to promote and co-ordinate active participation by people with disabilities in the sailing community. It is a national organisation and membership is open to anyone who share its aims.
